Log2 blocks could be mined to have the item dropped retain the data value of the block, these items where removed in 17w47a (1.13 snapshot).
Obtaining
Mining
In snapshot 14w25a, mining acacia log resulted in dropping log2 with data value of 4, while mining dark oak loge resulted in dropping log2 with data value of 5.[1]
Silk Touch
For exactly one snapshot, 14w25b (1.8 snapshot), a Silk Touch item can be used to obtain the data values of 8 and 9.[2] A player must first place down an acacia or dark oak log, and then break them using the Silk Touch tool. This would create data value 8 from the acacia log, and data value 9 from the dark oak log.
